~ Raven ~
A Gate Keeper of The EverRealm
Upon A Raven's Wing
by D.K. Anderson
The Calling to the vision was strong.
The night's wind whipped through his long cloak, swirling it about his legs like liquid darkness and throwing the hood of it away from his face. He remained steadfast. His silver eyes stared into the black of what lay beyond, his sight seemingly empty and unfocused, but any who knew his ways knew better. That which held him rapt was unseen by all save the old man he had left in the warmth of the fire built upon the red rock of the desert. There was no keeping anything of import from that one. He seemed to know everything. But this man's task, at this moment, was to simply know something, anything about that which had yet to unfold.
Some things are best left as they are. Or were.
With an almost imperceptible nod of his tawny head, the man upon the precipice acknowledged the thought that had come to him from the firelight.
We dare not end the search, he thought in return. The prize is too valuable.
He refocused his mind on the vision at hand and attempted to shut out everything else. The Calling was too strong to ignore despite the old man's warning to leave it unheeded. Its voice was too insistent. What it asked of him was yet unknown, but, as was his custom, he answered it.

The Doll
OOAK 1/6 Scale Doll Art
by
D. K. Anderson
Raven is an enigma. He is dark. He is light. His pale gray, almost silver eyes are not windows but walls. More often than not, his replies are silent and subtle...a slight lift of one eyebrow, the narrowing of a glance, more depth at the corners of his mouth. These are the hallmarks of this mystic of The EverRealm, and it was my challenge to bring them to life in doll form. The canvas for this work of doll art was a highly articulated, 1/6 scale action figure. The original doll had a closely cropped molded hairstyle, so no major resculpting was required. I did, however, apply mohair in a delicious, hand dyed tawny color to give Raven a longer, more natural hairstyle that could be pulled back away from his face. His original face paint was completely removed and new features were created using quality acrylics and sealers.
The clothing for Raven, as the story unfolds, is almost as important as the character himself. It must not only reveal but also conceal. The heavy boots and staff, both sculpted of polymer clay, label the man as a traveler, a nomad of sorts. His two cloaks protect Raven
from the elements and lend him an air of mystery. His trousers were sewn of durable black leather, supple yet protective. Chain mail, hand assembled from hundreds of individual jumprings, accent his hip length jerkin which is belted at the waist. From the belt hang the familiar EverRealm familial braids, one in black and the other white. More enigma. Darkness. Light. Night. Day. Death. Life. There is no easy answer to be found within Raven nor upon his person. The opening pages find Raven upon a precipice, a desert outcrop of red rock that overlooks the vastness of what lies below. Raven's accompanying stand is as much a piece of art as is Raven. The base is pine with a protective felt covering on the underside. The wood itself was painted and accented with modeling paste which gives the surface texture. The polymer clay sculpture of the desert rocks offers a unique backdrop to Raven as he stands in front of it. Additionally, Raven can be posed without the wire crotch stand so that he sits or reclines upon or against the rock sculpture. Modeling paste and acrylic paints were used to add to the scene's realism. The base is signed and dated.
